The day also focuses on men’s health, improving gender relations, highlighting male role models and promoting positive expressions of masculinity. It is an opportunity to recognize men who do not fit into traditional manifestations of masculinity, such as gay, bisexual and transgender men.

The aims for International Men’s Day are to:

  • Make a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys
  • Promote a positive conversation about men and masculinity.
  • Raise awareness and/or funding for charities that support the wellbeing of men and boys

These aims are designed to help more organizations and individuals consider the steps they can take to address some of the issues that affect men and boys, such as:

  • The high suicide rate for men
  • The challenges boys and men face within education and work
  • Men’s health, shorter life expectancy and deaths at work
  • The challenges faced by the most marginalized men and boys in society
  • Male victims of violence, including sexual violence
  • The challenges facing men as parents
  • Negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers

What we did in 2021…

We hosted an informal drop-in event where men could discuss what they would like to see in their community. Attendees were also asked what activities they would like to see take place. Refreshments were provided. We enjoyed meeting everybody!
