SUMMARY:Football\, Carromboard & Food at the Station with Diasporas
DESCRIPTION:Every WEDNESDAY from 15th May 2024 – 24th July 2024 from 7pm – 9pm – All welcome \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail: mp@multiculturalcumbria.org.uk for any enquiries \n\n\n\nNOT the Fire Station please. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarromboard is very popular in the Indian subcontinent\, and is known by various names in different languages. In South Asia\, many clubs and cafés hold regular tournaments. Carromboard is commonly played by families\, including children\, and at social functions. \n\n\n\nCarromboard originated in the 18th century\, invented by the Indian maharajas. It is a multi generational game as well as a competitive league game. After the First World War\, the game of Carromboard gained more popularity.  \n\n\n\n________________________________________________________ We are working with Cumbria Police and Cumbria Fire Service an bring together people from different diaspora communities to come together\, to play the beautiful game\, A popular South Asian Board game that has gained popularity in the African community with our work in supporting people seeking asylum and refugees\, from Syria\, Iran\, Iraq\, Eritrea\, Sudan Afghanistan. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThere has also been an influx of migrant workers in particular for the NHS. Skilled migrant workers include people from Zimbabwe. Ghana\, Nigeria\, India\, Thailand\, amongst others. There are also settled diasporas with 3-4 generations living in Cumbria\, from Nepal\, Pakistan\, India\, China\, Singapore\, Malaysia and middle eastern countries. \n\n\n\nMulticulturalism is about integration and community cohesion. A great concern has been a lack of racial hate crimes being reported to the police and that concerns us. We here many many instances of racial incidents. If the police don’t know about the race hate crimes\, they do not have evidence to make it a higher priority. \n\n\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\n\n\nWhat is Carromboard? \n\n\n\nCarrom is a tabletop game which is a cross between Pool and air hockey. The game of Carrom is played by propelling discs and potting them into the four corner pockets on a wooden playing board. \n\n\n\nWhat are the fouls in carrom? \n\n\n\nIf you strike any piece hard enough that it moves out of the board then it is a foul. If the last pieces are struck to the pocket before the queen is then it is considered foul. If the player has not kept the striker in the proper position and within the line\, then it is considered a foul. \n\n\n\nHow to play Carromboard? \n\n\n\nA turn consists of one or more strikes. A player wins by pocketing all of the pieces of their chosen colour first. However\, neither player can win until one or other player has “covered the Queen”. To cover the Queen\, a player must pocket one of her own pieces immediately after pocketing the Queen. \n\n\n\nCan we play Ludo at these sessions? \n\n\n\nOf course\, bring your ludo board along and invite others to play \n\n\n\nWhere can we play football? \n\n\n\nThe Border City Green FC has already played with the Hilltop FC club and are always welcoming new players from international heritage to play\, once a week usally in the Botcherby area of Carlisle. \n\n\n\nWhat sort of food will there be? \n\n\n\nVolunteer home cooks and pro chefs will prepare the food\, so every week the food will be from different countries in the world\, from middle east\, south Asia and Africa. The meals are not set and are open for enthusiastic community cooks to cook meals for up to 45 people a week. \n\n\n\nWhat else will be happening? \n\n\n\nThe session are free\, and an opportunity to report and racial hate crimes. We understand that most race hate crimes will not be reported because of a lack of evidence and looking for language translator volunteers during the 12 week sessions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Details: Website: www.multiculturalcumbria.org.uk Tel No: 0300 30 20 924 University of Cumbria\, Room 003-004 Homeacres\, Brampton Road\,Carlisle\, Cumbria\, CA3 9AY
